Thane: TMC urges residents to boil water before consumption for a week

Residents in several parts of Thane have been advised to boil and filter drinking water before consumption for the next seven days following the completion of repair work at the Yewai balancing reservoir. The advisory has been issued as a precautionary measure amid concerns that the repairs and subsequent resumption of operations could affect the quality of water supplied to parts of the Mumbai metropolitan region.

The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) issued the advisory on Wednesday, October 28, following a similar precautionary notice from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). Residents in areas that receive water through connections to the BMC’s Pise-Panjrapur water supply pipeline have been asked to follow the recommended precautions throughout the seven-day period.

Water quality concerns after reservoir repairs

Repair work on Compartment No. 2 of the Yewai balancing reservoir, which forms part of the Pise-Panjrapur water supply system, has been completed. The compartment was brought back into operation on Wednesday.

The system supplies water to Mumbai city and its eastern suburbs, as well as areas under the Thane and Bhiwandi municipal corporations that receive water through the BMC’s network. The resumption of operations following the repairs may affect the quality of water distributed through the system, prompting authorities to issue precautionary instructions to consumers.

The BMC has advised residents in the areas receiving water through the affected system to boil and filter drinking water before consumption for seven days. The TMC has subsequently asked residents in the affected localities within its jurisdiction to follow the same instructions.

The advisory is intended to reduce potential health risks while the water supply system resumes operations. Residents have been urged to take precautions when using water for drinking and to ensure that water intended for consumption is treated as recommended by the civic authorities.

Several Thane localities covered by advisory

The precautionary instructions apply to several neighbourhoods in Thane that receive water through connections to the BMC’s Pise-Panjrapur pipeline. These include Hajuri, Louiswadi, Kajuwadi, Jijamata Nagar, Raghunath Nagar, Namdev Wadi and Sainath Nagar.

Other affected localities include Ramchandra Nagar No. 1, Kopri-Anand Nagar, Ram Maruti Road, the Masunda Lake area, Jambli Naka, Kharkar Ali, Mahagiri, Koliwada and Patilwadi.

The advisory also covers the B-Cabin area, the Tekdi Bungalow area, Bhakti Mandir Road and Pachpakhadi. Residents in these areas have been asked to follow the instructions for the entire seven-day precautionary period.

Residents urged to follow safety instructions

The TMC has appealed to residents in the identified localities to ensure that drinking water is boiled and filtered before consumption. The precautionary measure is particularly relevant for households that depend on the BMC’s pipeline network for their daily water requirements.

Residents have been advised to continue following the instructions during the specified period, even as the repaired reservoir has returned to operation. The civic advisory applies specifically to the localities supplied through the connected pipeline network in Thane.
