Mumbai’s first Seafood Plaza, located near Mahim Chowpatty, has reopened with stalls run by women’s self-help groups, offering visitors a range of fish delicacies. The plaza will be open every Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 7 pm to 11 pm.
The stalls became operational on Saturday, October 24, as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) renewed its initiative to promote the city’s Koli food culture, support women’s livelihoods and boost tourism.
Yashwant Killedar, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) group leader and chairperson of the G North Ward Committee; Marathi actor Kamalakar Satpute; and Yogesh Desai, Assistant Commissioner of the G North Ward, attended the reopening along with civic officials and members of the women’s self-help groups.
Plaza aims to promote Koli cuisine and tourism
The Seafood Plaza features decorative lighting, a selfie point and seating arrangements for visitors. It also offers an opportunity to experience traditional Koli cuisine and culture.
The BMC launched the plaza near Mahim Chowpatty to improve the surroundings of Mumbai’s Koliwadas, promote local culinary traditions and provide women’s self-help groups with opportunities to earn a livelihood. According to the civic body, thousands of tourists have visited the plaza over the past few years.
Women receive training in fish-based products
The women participating in the initiative have received training in fish-based products to help them develop business skills and improve their economic prospects. The BMC aims to support their financial independence while contributing to the local economy.
Yogesh Desai, Assistant Commissioner of the G North Ward, appealed to residents to visit the plaza and support the city’s traditional Koli culture and cuisine.
Mumbai civic body hosts khadi exhibition
Earlier this month, the BMC organised a three-day exhibition of khadi and village industries products at its headquarters to promote local artisans and entrepreneurs and provide them with a wider market.
The exhibition, organised in association with the Maharashtra State Khadi and Village Industries Board, was inaugurated on October 13, by BMC House Leader Ganesh Khankar in the presence of board chairman Ravindra Sathe, who holds the rank of a Minister of State.
Khankar also appealed to BMC officers and employees to wear khadi clothing at least once a week and encouraged Mumbai residents to purchase khadi and village industry products.
