NCP names Zeeshan Siddique Mumbai unit chief, Umesh Patil chief spokesperson

The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has appointed MLA Zeeshan Siddique as president of its Mumbai unit and Solapur district party president Umesh Patil as its national chief spokesperson as it reshuffles key organisational positions.

The appointments were announced by NCP national president and Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar. The appointment letters were handed over to the two leaders at Devgiri, the official residence of the deputy chief minister, on Tuesday, in the presence of MP Parth Pawar and other party leaders and office-bearers.

Sunetra Pawar expressed confidence that the two leaders would work to strengthen the party organisation and expand its outreach among citizens.

Zeeshan Siddique takes charge of Mumbai unit

Zeeshan Siddique, the son of late politician Baba Siddique, has been entrusted with leading the NCP’s Mumbai organisation. He contested the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly elections from Bandra East but lost to Shiv Sena (UBT) candidate Varun Sardesai.

The appointment comes as the party seeks to strengthen its organisational presence in Mumbai, where it has historically faced challenges in building a substantial electoral base compared with its strongholds in western Maharashtra.

The party leadership expressed confidence that Siddique would work to strengthen the Mumbai unit and improve its engagement with residents. His responsibilities are expected to include organisational coordination and efforts to expand the party’s grassroots network across the city.

Umesh Patil appointed national chief spokesperson

The party has also appointed Umesh Patil, who served as the NCP’s Solapur district president, as its national chief spokesperson. The appointments form part of the party’s efforts to strengthen its organisational structure and communication.

Sunetra Pawar said she expected both leaders to work with dedication and commitment to expand the party’s reach while carrying forward the public service legacy of late NCP leader Ajit Pawar.

The appointment letters emphasised the party’s commitment to its progressive legacy and grassroots engagement with citizens. Party leaders and office-bearers attended the meeting at Devgiri, where the appointments were formally communicated.

NCP seeks to strengthen its presence in Mumbai

The appointment comes as the NCP seeks to expand its influence in Mumbai, where it has historically struggled to match its organisational strength in western Maharashtra.

In the January 2026 Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections, the NCP won three of the civic body’s 227 seats. The results highlighted the party’s limited representation in Mumbai’s municipal politics compared with larger political formations.

Siddique’s appointment follows a period of political uncertainty after his defeat in the November 2024 Assembly elections from Bandra East. He was subsequently elected to the Maharashtra Legislative Council in May 2026, marking his return to elected office.

The NCP will now look to strengthen its organisation in the financial capital, build a wider grassroots network and improve its engagement with urban voters ahead of future electoral contests.
