The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow heat alert for Mumbai and Thane, warning of hot and humid conditions in isolated pockets on Saturday. The weather department has also placed Palghar, Raigad and Ratnagiri under a yellow alert as temperatures remain above normal across parts of Maharashtra.
Mumbai and its suburbs are likely to witness mainly clear skies, with maximum and minimum temperatures expected to hover around 36 degrees Celsius and 26 degrees Celsius, respectively. The IMD has warned of a possibility of heatwave conditions in the city and suburbs.
According to the IMD’s 8:30 AM weather report, the Colaba observatory in South Mumbai recorded a high of 37.0 degrees Celsius, while the Santacruz observatory in the suburbs logged 37.8 degrees Celsius.
Mumbai weather and AQI
Mumbai recorded an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 89 on Saturday morning, falling in the satisfactory category, according to the Central Pollution Control Board’s SAMEER app. Air quality in this category may cause minor breathing discomfort to sensitive people.
Among the city’s monitoring stations, Deonar recorded the highest AQI at 144, followed by Chembur at 115 and Andheri at 102. Borivali recorded an AQI of 85, while Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) stood at 84. Ghatkopar recorded 82, Colaba 75 and Byculla 74.
Across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), Thane recorded an AQI of 104, while Navi Mumbai stood at 89 and Kalyan at 85.
Maharashtra swelters as temperatures rise above normal
Several parts of Maharashtra recorded significantly above-normal maximum temperatures on Saturday, according to the IMD’s weather report issued at 8.30 am on October 10. The maximum temperatures and evening humidity readings in the bulletin correspond to October 9.
Jalgaon recorded the highest maximum temperature at 38.5 degrees Celsius, which was 3.3 degrees Celsius above normal.
Malegaon followed closely at 38.4 degrees Celsius, recording the state’s highest departure from normal at 5.6 degrees Celsius.
Mumbai’s Santacruz observatory recorded 37.8 degrees Celsius, 4.7 degrees Celsius above normal, while Solapur recorded 37.7 degrees Celsius, 4.5 degrees Celsius above normal.
Mahabaleshwar was the coolest reported station, with a maximum temperature of 28.2 degrees Celsius.
Malegaon records 100 per cent evening humidity
Malegaon also recorded exceptionally high humidity, with relative humidity at 95 per cent at 8.30 am and 100 per cent at 5.30 pm on October 9.
At 8.30 am, Mumbai’s Colaba recorded 83 per cent relative humidity, followed by Ratnagiri at 82 per cent. Kolhapur and Ahmednagar recorded 79 per cent each, while Dahanu and Harnai stood at 78 per cent.
Satara recorded 77 per cent humidity, Beed 74 per cent and Sangli 71 per cent. Nashik, Osmanabad and Parbhani each recorded 70 per cent.
With the IMD warning of hot and humid conditions across parts of the Konkan region, residents are advised to follow official weather updates and take precautions against prolonged exposure to heat.
