IMD issues heatwave yellow alert for Mumbai, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday issued a yellow alert for a heatwave, warning that heatwave-like conditions are likely to persist throughout the day across parts of Mumbai and surrounding areas.

In its afternoon weather forecast bulletin, the weather forecasting agency said heatwave conditions are likely to occur in isolated pockets of the Mumbai, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg districts.

The warning indicates that residents in these areas may continue to experience intense heat during the day. People, particularly those working outdoors, commuting, and senior citizens, are advised to take precautions against prolonged exposure to high temperatures.

Hot and humid conditions to persist in Thane

Meanwhile, the IMD has forecast hot and humid conditions in isolated pockets of the Thane district. The combination of heat and humidity may add to discomfort for residents, particularly during afternoon hours.

The yellow alert serves as a warning for residents to remain alert to prevailing weather conditions and take necessary precautions.

Mumbai records maximum temperature of 38.5 degrees Celsius on Wendesday

According to the IMD’s 8.30 am weather report, the Colaba observatory in South Mumbai recorded a temperature of 36.5 degrees Celsius, while the Santacruz observatory recorded 38.2 degrees Celsius.

The readings indicate warmer conditions in the suburbs, where temperatures have climbed above the forecast maximum for the day.

Mumbai AQI remains in ‘moderate’ category

Alongside the rising temperatures, Mumbai recorded an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 101 on Wednesday morning, placing it in the moderate category, according to the Central Pollution Control Board’s SAMEER app. Air quality in this range may cause minor breathing discomfort among sensitive individuals.

Among the city’s monitoring stations, Deonar recorded the highest AQI at 165. Bandra-Kurla Complex registered 125, while Colaba recorded 129. Malad reported an AQI of 107, Byculla stood at 102, and Borivali recorded 93. Ghatkopar had the lowest reading among the listed Mumbai locations, at 65, followed by Kandivali at 79.

Across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, Thane recorded an AQI of 75, while Navi Mumbai stood at 86 and Kalyan at 82.

The readings show variations in air quality across the metropolitan region, with some locations recording moderate pollution levels while others remained in the satisfactory category.
