The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) on Monday said that it has achieved a construction milestone on the Thane Coastal Road-1 project by erecting 10 I-girders in a single day on October 14, 2026, an official statement said.
The achievement surpassed the usual daily output of four to six girders, marking a significant step forward in the construction of the corridor. Overall progress on the project has reached 45 per cent, according to the MMRDA.
The MMRDA’s project team completed the erection of 10 I-girders in a single day, exceeding its typical daily output. The milestone is expected to support construction progress on the corridor, it said.
The Thane Coastal Road-1 project is part of efforts to improve road connectivity and provide an alternative route for motorists travelling through the busy Ghodbunder Road stretch.
13.45-km corridor to ease pressure on Ghodbunder Road
The 13.45-km, six-lane, access-controlled corridor will connect NH-3 and NH-48 at Kharegaon Toll Naka with Gaimukh.
Once completed, the road is expected to provide an alternative to Ghodbunder Road, which carries substantial traffic. It is also expected to improve connectivity between the Mumbai-Nashik Highway and Gaimukh.
With construction progress currently at 45 per cent, the latest milestone marks a step forward in the development of the corridor.
The project
The project is being built using several advanced engineering techniques. It will be the first greenfield road project in India to use a single-pile, single-pier system with monopile foundations on land, according to the project authorities.
The project is expected to provide faster and safer connectivity for traffic travelling towards Thane, Nashik, Bhiwandi, Gujarat and North India.
The project includes a 240-metre creek bridge and an 8.11-km elevated road passing through mangrove areas.
A 40 to 45-metre-wide Development Plan (DP) road has also been reserved for the project. This is expected to help separate local traffic from inter-city traffic on Ghodbunder Road.
Part of a wider transport network
Thane Coastal Road-1 is also expected to connect with several future infrastructure projects, including the Thane Ring Metro, Thane Coastal Road-2, Saket-Amane Elevated Corridor and Kasarvadavali-Kharbhav Road.
Once integrated, these projects are expected to form an important part of Thane’s future transport network.
