Kirit Somaiya seeks LOC against actor Imran Khan over Mumbai protest case

BJP leader and former MP Kirit Somaiya has approached the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and immigration authorities, seeking a Look Out Circular (LOC) against actor Imran Khan and requesting that he be prevented from leaving India until an inquiry into his complaint and a police investigation are completed.

In a letter dated October 13 to Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan, Somaiya urged the ministry to issue directions restricting Khan’s overseas travel under the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025. He also asked the Bureau of Immigration to issue an LOC and alert the police if the actor attempts to leave the country.

Somaiya seeks travel restrictions on actor

Somaiya’s request follows a protest held at Mumbai’s August Kranti Maidan on October 10, where demonstrators demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

In his letter, Somaiya claimed that the gathering took place without the required permission. He also alleged that Imran Khan attended the demonstration before Mumbai Police detained him at the venue.

According to the letter, Gamdevi Police Station registered an FIR, numbered 813 of 2026, in connection with the incident, naming Khan in the case. Somaiya said he had not received a copy of the FIR.

Actor’s citizenship and OCI status raised

Somaiya claimed in his letter that Khan is a US citizen and reportedly holds an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card.

He urged the MHA and the Bureau of Immigration to examine whether the actor’s participation in the protest warrants action under Section 7D of the Citizenship Act, 1955, and the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025.

The request seeks an assessment by the authorities of whether any legal provisions applicable to Khan’s reported immigration status have been violated. The allegations and the legal implications of his participation in the demonstration have not been established by the request itself.

BJP leader shares letter on X

Somaiya also shared a copy of his letter to the Union Home Secretary on X, outlining his request for an LOC against the actor.

“Requested Immigration Home Ministry to issue a LOC (look out circular) against Imran Khan to not to leave India,” he wrote.

He further asked the Bureau of Immigration to alert Gamdevi Police Station if Khan attempts to travel abroad. Somaiya has also sought a written update from the authorities on the action taken in response to his request.

Imran Khan detained during October 10 protest

Khan was detained by Mumbai Police on October 10 while attending a demonstration at August Kranti Maidan.

The actor had joined a protest organised by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), which called for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
