Fadnavis Welcomes Debate on Electoral Reform Amid Opposition Proposals

On Saturday, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed his openness to discussions surrounding electoral reforms, following NCP (SP) MP Supriya Sule’s announcement of a bill aimed at addressing alleged “horse trading” in elections, as reported by PTI. This dialogue comes in the wake of accusations from the Opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) about coercive tactics and inducements leading up to the Maharashtra Legislative Council elections, which the ruling Mahayuti alliance has firmly denied.

Sule has proposed a bill in Parliament that seeks to enhance transparency in elections marred by accusations of horse trading. She has advocated for either reforming indirect elections or implementing open voting mechanisms to curb manipulation, according to PTI.

In response, CM Fadnavis stated that electoral reform is a topic worthy of discussion and personal viewpoints, asserting that legislative proposals on the matter would not face opposition. He remarked, “If you realize that people can be persuaded through kindness rather than money, then such a bill might not be necessary,” as reported by the news agency. He further indicated that potential reforms in the electoral process could be explored, while emphasizing that differing political perspectives on this issue are a natural aspect of democracy.

Political tensions are mounting as several Opposition candidates have recently withdrawn from the MLC contest across various constituencies, stirring controversy. The Shiv Sena (UBT) and Congress have accused the ruling alliance of employing pressure tactics, charges that Mahayuti leaders have dismissed, according to PTI.

In related news, Shiv Sena (UBT) candidates Bal Mane and Devyani Patil-Dongankar have pulled their nominations from significant constituencies, while two Congress candidates faced suspension after their withdrawal from the race. Regarding speculation about former legislator Bal Mane potentially rejoining the BJP, CM Fadnavis noted that the state party leadership would determine this decision, as per PTI. He also mentioned that discussions have yet to occur regarding filling the vacancy left by Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar’s resignation from the Rajya Sabha, according to the news agency.
