A woman, about 50 years old, died on the spot after being hit by a speeding car while she was crossing the road near the Bandra-Worli Sea Link on Sunday night. The woman has not yet been identified.
Following the incident, the driver, identified as Gurvinder Singh, did not escape the scene and instead informed the Bandra police about the accident, said an officer. The Bandra police apprehended Singh but later released him after serving a notice. Police said they have registered an FIR in the case, and an investigation has been launched.
According to a police officer, the accident took place around 10.30 pm near the sea link in Bandra West. “The woman was crossing the road near the sea link at around 10.30 pm when Singh, who was returning home after crossing the sea link toll booth from Worli to Bandra, accelerated and hit the woman who was crossing the road,” said the officer. During the questioning, Singh told the police that it was raining heavily and the road was dark, due to which he did not see the woman crossing.
Speaking to mid-day, Senior Inspector Sanjay Marathe of Bandra police station said, “We have registered an FIR against the car driver… The woman was crossing the road at a location where pedestrian crossings are prohibited.” “Singh told us that it was raining heavily and the road was dark. He also told us that he didn’t see the woman and hit her accidentally.” “The woman died on the spot. We have sent the body for postmortem and registered an FIR. The woman is still unidentified, and we are trying to trace her family,” Senior PI Marathe added.
