MMRDA launches elevated freeway extension project for faster Mumbai-Thane travel

Mumbai is set for a major mobility upgrade as the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has initiated the construction of the Elevated Eastern Freeway Extension.

In a post on X, the MMRDA has said that a 13.9 km, fully elevated six-lane high-speed corridor will slash travel time between South Mumbai and Thane to just 25–30 minutes. 

MMRDA, while posting on social media platform X, also emphasised that the construction of the Elevated Freeway Extension will also ease daily congestion on the Eastern Express Highway (EEH), which is one of Mumbai’s busiest arterial routes.

MMRDA wrote, “MMRDA has commenced construction of the Elevated Eastern Freeway Extension, a 13.9 km, fully elevated 6-lane high-speed corridor that will dramatically reduce travel time between South Mumbai and Thane to 25–30 minutes, while easing daily congestion on the Eastern Express Highway (EEH)—one of Mumbai’s busiest arterial routes serving lakhs of commuters every day.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority further added that, “The corridor will run from Anand Nagar, Thane, to Chheda Nagar, Ghatkopar, with key links at Mulund, Airoli, JVLR, Vikhroli, Kanjurmarg, Mankhurd and Ghatkopar.”

Once operational, the extension will drastically improve travel efficiency, reduce emissions, and support greener commuting. The construction of this elevated bridge will further boost economic activity across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) by connecting the southern part of the city to Thane. 

In Thane, the corridor will merge seamlessly with the Anand Nagar–Saket Elevated Road near the erstwhile Mulund Octroi Naka, forming a continuous high-speed route. It will also provide seamless onwards connectivity to the Samruddhi Motorway, wrote MMRDA. 

In line with its sustainability commitment, MMRDA realigned the Vikhroli–Ghatkopar section to save 127 pink trumpet trees. Additionally, 4,175 compensatory trees will be planted to enhance the region’s green cover.

While asserting about the Elevated Eastern Freeway Extension, the MMRDA also emphasised some key highlights about the project.

Key highlights: 

  • Construction of 2.5 m diameter monopiles, robust piers, 40 m spans, and a 25 m single-segment superstructure
  • Single-pile, single-pier system — first-of-its-kind for an elevated road in MMR
  • Up–down ramps near Mulund Check Naka, Airoli Junction & Vikhroli Junction
  • 3+3 lane elevated toll plaza near Navghar Flyover
  • Designed for uninterrupted, safe, high-speed movement
  • Construction of 2.5 m diameter monopiles, robust piers, 40 m spans, and a 25 m single-segment superstructure.

The MMRDA also highlighted the current status of the project, asserting the preliminary surveys have already been completed along with the piling work. 

Authorities also asserted that geotechnical investigations have also been done, along with utility mapping substantially completed.

Hinting at the current status of the project, the MMRDA said that the “working piles and pier casting are still underway.”
