Woman threatens false rape case, demands Rs 30 lakh, booked

A 35-year-old bank manager from Dadar in Mumbai has filed a police complaint against a former Aadhaar centre operator and her lawyer associate, alleging that the duo was blackmailing him for Rs 30 lakh by threatening to register a false rape case.

According to the Dadar police, the complainant, a senior official at a nationalised bank’s South Mumbai branch, met the 26-year-old woman in 2023 while she was working at the Aadhaar enrolment centre located within the same bank, and their relationship became closer over time.

In his complaint with the police, he said that the woman reportedly started calling him frequently and expressed romantic interest, even after learning that he was married.

Police said that the two began meeting outside work and spending time together. They also travelled together to places where they allegedly developed a physical relationship “with mutual consent”.

Over time, the relationship soured, especially after the woman lost her job, and according to the complainant, she then began demanding money from him, citing financial difficulties. The complainant claims to have transferred over Rs 3.5 lakh to her account to help her tide over personal problems.

Things, however, took a shocking turn when the complainant discovered messages suggesting that the woman had been in a similar relationship with another man, allegedly for monetary gain.

“When the banker tried to end contact, the woman allegedly became aggressive, threatening to expose the relationship to his wife and colleagues. With a lawyer friend, she threatened to press criminal charges against him unless he pays Rs 30 lakhs to settle the matter,” said a police officer.

Under mounting pressure, the complainant reportedly arranged Rs 5 lakh in cash, borrowed from a friend, and handed it over at the lawyer’s office in Mira Road in early September. An agreement draft was allegedly prepared on stamp paper, with the remaining Rs 25 lakh to be paid later.

However, when the complainant failed to make further payment, the woman allegedly began visiting his residence and workplace, demanding the remaining sum and threatening to file a rape case if he did not comply.

Following this, the bank official approached the Dadar police and filed a complaint against the woman and her lawyer. He also handed screenshots of chats and voice recordings of the woman making threats as evidence to the police.

“We are examining the digital evidence and verifying the financial transactions given by the victim. We will be sending notice to the woman to cooperate with the investigation. If she fails, we will be arresting her. She is currently booked for the charges of extortion,” a senior officer confirmed.
