Two labourers were killed and three others injured when a portion of soil and mud collapsed during foundation and piling work at a building site in Habib Mansion on Hans Road in Mumbai’s Byculla (West), on Saturday afternoon.
The labourers were rushed to Nair Hospital around 2.40 pm. At 4.15 pm, Dr Poonam, the hospital’s assistant medical officer, said that two of the labourers brought to the hospital — Rahul (30) and Raju (28) — had died. The injured—Sajjad Ali (25), Sobat Ali (28), and Lal Mohd (18)— are undergoing treatment and their condition is said to be stable.
Rescue teams reached the site immediately following the accident to assist the trapped workers. Investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of the soil collapse, and authorities have urged construction companies to adhere strictly to safety protocols to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Three killed as gas tanker rams vehicles in chain collision in Mangaluru
Three people were killed in a chain collision involving two tankers, an autorickshaw, and an SUV near Panambur junction on Saturday, police said.
According to officials, the accident occurred around 11.15 am when a cow suddenly attempted to cross the road, prompting a gas tanker travelling from Mulki towards Mangaluru to brake abruptly. The autorickshaw following the tanker managed to stop in time, as did the SUV behind it. However, a second tanker approaching from the rear at high speed allegedly failed to brake and collided with the SUV.
The impact pushed the SUV to the side of the road, while the autorickshaw, caught between the two tankers, was crushed instantly. The driver of the autorickshaw and two passengers died at the scene, police said, adding that their identities are being verified.
Authorities noted that visibility was clear and traffic was moderate at the time of the incident. Investigators are examining whether excessive speed or brake failure caused the rear tanker to lose control. The tanker drivers and SUV driver escaped without major injuries.
Traffic on the busy Mangaluru-Udupi highway was disrupted for nearly an hour as cranes were deployed to remove the damaged vehicles. Police have registered a case and initiated investigation.
