Mumbai local trains will soon have automatic doors and its trial has began at Kurla Carshed, officials said.
Trial of the automatic doors were conducted in the presence of outgoing General Manager Dharam Veer Meena.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw had last week announced that Mumbai will start getting closed-door local trains from December 2025.
“From the safety perspective of commuters in Mumbai, it is very important that any local trains operating in Mumbai have their doors closed. It has now been decided that all trains henceforth manufactured for Mumbai will have closed doors. We have conducted three experiments in this context. The first is retrofitting doors on all existing local trains, the second is that all non-AC trains being manufactured will have closed doors, and naturally, the AC trains being manufactured will also come with closed doors. It has been decided in principle to have closed doors on all local trains, AC or non-AC,” Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said.
“As of Monday, three experiments have been conducted and, as I had promised earlier, work is currently underway to ensure that existing trains have closed doors by December 2025. We have already floated a tender for 238 AC local trains, and the process has already begun,” he said.
