Thane civic body begins drive to recover Rs 250 crore in pending water bills

The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has launched a major drive to recover unpaid water bills amounting to around Rs 250 crore, officials said on Friday.

Of the total dues, Rs 92.28 crore are pending arrears, while Rs 157.8 crore pertain to the current financial year. Municipal Commissioner Saurabh Rao has instructed the water supply department to ensure 100 per cent recovery within this fiscal.

Since April, the civic body has already recovered Rs 43 crore, about 18 per cent of the total amount, under the ongoing campaign.

As part of the recovery efforts, the TMC has begun disconnecting water connections, seizing motor pumps, and sealing meter rooms across all wards.

Officials warned that users who reconnect their supply without clearing dues will face legal action.

Water supply to be disrupted in parts of Thane on November 1

The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has announced a 24-hour water supply shutdown in several parts of the city on Saturday, November 1, to carry out essential infrastructure work aimed at improving the city’s water distribution network.

According to the civic body, the shutdown will impact areas under the Vartak Nagar and Lokmanya Savarkar Nagar ward committees. The disruption is necessary to commission a newly laid 1,168 mm diameter water main connected to the Indiranagar pump — a key component of Thane’s water supply system.

To facilitate the integration work, the TMC’s water supply department will also install a valve on the 750 mm main pipeline at Nitin Company Junction. As a result, water supply will remain completely suspended for 24 hours from 9 am on Saturday, November 1, to 9 am on Sunday, November 2.

Areas likely to be affected include Indiranagar, Srinagar, Waralipada, Kailasnagar Reno Tank, Rupadevi, Rupadevi Reno Tank, Ramnagar, Yeoor Air Force area, and Lokmanya area.

TMC officials have cautioned that once the connection work is completed and supply resumes, residents may experience low water pressure for one to two days as the system stabilises. The civic body has urged citizens to store adequate water in advance and use it judiciously during the shutdown.

The commissioning of the new 1,168 mm water main forms part of TMC’s broader efforts to modernise Thane’s water infrastructure and ensure equitable distribution across the city.
