`Thamma is my first festival release in a decade`: Ayushmann Khurrana reveals

As Ayushmann Khurrana gears up for the release of his upcoming film, Thamma, the actor couldn`t stop gushing about how excited he was for the movie. He was recently seen getting candid at the 25th edition of FICCI Frames, Asia`s premier media and entertainment conclave, which is underway in Mumbai.

Ayushmann Khurrana about Thamma

Talking about the horror-comedy film, Ayushmann said, “Thaama is kind of a genesis. It carries forward the chapter, the new chapter in Maddock`s comedy universe. It`s based on Indian folklore. We`ve heard about Daityas (demonic Gods), Thaama is the most powerful Daitya.”

Revealing how Thamma marks his first-ever festival release, he shared, “This is my first Diwali release. It`s been more than a decade in the film industry. But I haven`t had any festival releases yet. This is my biggest release in terms of scale, marketing, and universe. I think this is the most successful universe in the history of Hindi cinema. (9:54) And I`m very excited about it. It`s a commercial film, Diwali, family, everything.

Ayushmann Khurrana opens up about shifting away from taboo topics

The Vicky Donor actor further revealed how he has changed his choices in films. “I really believe a good subject, a good script is a good script. (6:46) But at the same time, I have deviated post-pandemic. Whatever my choices were pre-pandemic, they were more taboo-based,” he admitted.

He further revealed, “I`m staying slightly away from taboo but not from quirk. So it has to be for a bigger palette, a larger palette, more rooted, more commercial in a way. My line-up right now is Thamma, which is my first big Diwali release. Then followed by a Sooraj Barjatiya, which is again for a wider audience. Then there will be a Dharma film, which is again a wider audience. But I keep taking a break in between. I keep doing those `keeda` films because that`s my core. I can`t get rid of that, but at the same time, I need to make sure that it`s not taboo, it could be quirky for sure.”

He added, “So anything which is not a phenomenon, which goes with a wider palette, is more commercial, more theatrical, (8:10) but taboo films can go horribly.”
