Supriya Sule demands SIT probe by retired judge in Satara doctor death case

Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) MP Supriya Sule on Monday met the family of the young female doctor who allegedly died by suicide at the Sub-District Hospital in Phaltan, Satara district, and demanded a fair and transparent investigation into the incident.

The deceased doctor had reportedly written a suicide note on her palm, alleging mental harassment, before taking the extreme step. The police have registered a case and arrested the accused.

Speaking to the media after meeting the bereaved family, Sule raised several key questions regarding the investigation and the alleged mishandling of sensitive information. “How was the CDR (Call Detail Record) report in this case leaked? Who accessed and interpreted it?” she asked, demanding that the case be investigated under the supervision of retired judges to ensure impartiality.

Calling the incident “deeply tragic,” Sule urged that it be viewed from a humanitarian perspective rather than through a political lens. “It is very unfortunate that some leaders in the government are making insensitive statements. The deceased doctor was a woman of strong character. There is a perception among people that attempts are being made to suppress the matter,” Sule said.

She also reminded that the Chief Minister had earlier promised to set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) for the Phaltan case, but claimed that no full-fledged SIT has been constituted yet. “I request Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis with folded hands to form an SIT and entrust its leadership to a retired judge to ensure justice for the victim’s family,” she appealed.

Sule further stated that NCP MP Bajrang Sonawane would meet Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi to apprise him of the situation. “We stand with the victim’s family purely on humanitarian grounds. There should be no political pressure in such cases. Whoever is guilty must be punished,” she asserted.

Criticising the alleged leak of investigation details, Sule said, “The CDR report of the female doctor’s suicide case was leaked. Certain individuals interpreted it in their own way. Isn’t that girl someone’s daughter? Making such insensitive remarks is unacceptable.”

The incident has sparked political tension in Maharashtra, with the Opposition demanding accountability and a transparent probe into the circumstances surrounding the young doctor’s death.

Earlier, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had ordered the setting up of a special investigation team (SIT) to probe the alleged suicide of a woman doctor in Satara district.

Fadnavis, who holds the Home portfolio, has directed the state Director General of Police to constitute an SIT under a woman IPS officer immediately.

The move comes amid pressure from citizens and political parties seeking justice for the deceased`s kin. The victim`s family had also appealed for an SIT investigation to ensure stern punishment for the culprits.
