Sunjay Kapur`s mother accuses Priya Kapur of hiding wealth amid the estate feud

The conflict over late industrialist Sunjay Kapur`s inheritance erupted on Monday when his mother, Rani Kapur, launched a new allegation against his widow, Priya Kapur. Priya, who has already been accused by Karisma Kapoor`s children of forging Sunjay`s will, is now facing a fresh accusation: she has disguised the full size of his riches.

Sunjay`s mother claims that despite receiving a salary of Rs 60 crore, his bank balance is only slightly more than Rs 1 crore.

Sunjay’s mother accuses Priya of hiding his fortune

Senior Advocate Vaibhav Gaggar, who was defending Rani Kapur, made the allegations on Monday in the Delhi High Court. Rani Kapur, through her lawyer, claimed that Priya engaged in “massive concealment” of her son`s assets.

The lawyer stated that Priya omitted important financial information from the court and that the money may have been transferred offshore.

“Massive concealment. My late husband built this house (a farmhouse in Delhi`s Rajokri neighbourhood). There are over 50 works of art. This gentleman (Sunjay Kapur) did not have life insurance, rental income, or mutual funds. His pay was Rs 60 crore, and we believe he has only Rs 1.7 crore in his accounts,” the lawyer stated.

He further continued, “My Lady may seek details of 2 years, not just of Mr Kapur but also of Defendant No 1 (Priya Kapur) because the money has moved. Any interim order must be in the nature of status quo ante because the money has moved across borders, potentially.”

The lawyer calls out Rani Kapur`s allegations

The lawyer also refuted Priya`s assertion that in the Kapur family, it was customary for a husband to leave his own assets to his wife, exactly as Sunjay`s father did with Rani Kapur.

The lawyer also contested Priya`s allegation that it is a Kapur family tradition for spouses to leave their personal assets to their wives, noting that Sunjay`s father had previously bequeathed his inheritance to Rani Kapur.

The lawyer stated, “How can you compare the two? She (Priya Kapur) was married to Sunjay for seven years. This was his third and her second marriage. I was married to my husband for forty years. The distinction doesn’t end here. Our Will was registered. The witness to our Will was a person whom my husband had known for 30 years. Here, the witness says he wasn’t even associated with the company before 2022.”

The legal counsel was speaking before Justice Jyoti Singh, who was hearing the interim injunction application filed by Karisma Kapoor`s two children (Samaira and Kiaan) to prevent Priya Kapur from acquiring any third-party rights to their father`s property. In the primary lawsuit, the children accuse stepmother Priya of forging the will. The Court will hear the subject again on December 3.
