Satara doctor death case: Youth Congress stages protest in Mumbai, 200 detained

Leaders and workers of the Mumbai Youth Congress staged a protest at Marine Drive on Monday, demanding a thorough Special Investigation Team (SIT) inquiry into the alleged suicide of a woman doctor in Phaltan taluka of Satara district in Maharashtra.

According to police, over 200 protestors were intercepted and detained while marching towards Varsha, the official residence of the Maharashtra Chief Minister.

The demonstrators included Mumbai Youth Congress president Zeenat Shabrin, national Youth Congress chief Uday Bhanu Chib, and state spokesperson Sachin Sawant.

They were taken to the Azad Maidan police station after being stopped near Malabar Hill.

Officials said adequate police deployment had been arranged across Malabar Hill and Girgaon to prevent any disturbances.

The Congress said protests were organised at Nariman Point, Marine Drive, and outside Varsha to press for an thorough SIT probe.

Sawant reiterated that the party would continue to demand justice for the deceased doctor’s family.

The 28-year-old doctor was found dead in a hotel room on October 23. A note written on her palm alleged that police sub-inspector Gopal Badane had raped her multiple times, while software engineer Prashant Bankar had mentally harassed her.

Both were arrested following the incident, and Badane was subsequently dismissed from the police force.

Meanwhile, Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) leader Prakash Ambedkar on Sunday met the family members of the woman doctor and demanded an `unbiased` SIT probe into the matter, reported the PTI.

Ambedkar has called for a fair and transparent investigation by the Special Investigation Team (SIT).

Speaking to reporters, he urged the SIT to examine all post-mortem reports filed in the past year, particularly those conducted under the supervision of the deceased doctor, to determine the level of professional pressure she may have faced.

“If any pressure is established, the inquiry should be expanded to identify those responsible, regardless of whether they are from the police, medical, political or social spheres,” he said, according to the PTI.

He further demanded a detailed review of the call records of all individuals who had contacted the doctor during the period in question to uncover the true cause behind her death.

The 28-year-old doctor was serving at a government hospital in Satara district of Maharashtra.
