Ranveer Singh and his list of controversies: From Kantara act to nude shoot

Ranveer Singh is all set for the release of his film Dhurandhar, marking his theatrical comeback after over two years. He was last seen on the big screen in the blockbuster Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahaani. Ahead of the film’s release, Ranveer attended the closing ceremony of IFFI in Goa, where he landed in controversy for praising Rishab Shetty’s Kantara 2 in his own style. He later apologised, stating he had no intention of hurting anyone’s sentiments.

While Ranveer cannot be called a child of controversy, he has sometimes unintentionally found himself in trouble. Here’s a look at some of the times the actor landed in controversy:

Ranveer`s Kantara act

At the IFFI closing ceremony, Ranveer was seen praising Rishabh Shetty’s Kantara 2, which performed exceptionally well at the box office. He also praised the actor’s performance and went on to mimic the Daiva act. However, fans of the film did not take this lightly, calling it disrespectful. Following the outrage, Ranveer publicly apologised through Instagram, clarifying that he intended only to appreciate Rishab Shetty’s craft.

Ranveer’s sexist ad backlash

Years ago, Ranveer featured in a clothing brand advertisement where he was seen carrying a woman over his shoulder. The tagline read, “Take your work home.” The ad was heavily criticised for objectifying women, and many questioned Ranveer for being part of it. Following massive backlash, the ad was taken down, and Ranveer issued an apology.

The AIB roast

The infamous AIB Roast—featuring Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor as special guests—triggered widespread protests, FIRs, and online backlash. Karan Johar was also a part of the roast. The ticketed event had stars like Alia Bhatt and Deepika Padukone in attendance. The show was eventually removed following multiple complaints from religious groups and conservative communities.

Ranveer’s brush with period `drama`

Ranveer has delivered some of his finest performances in period dramas like Bajirao Mastani and Padmaavat, but both films faced severe backlash. Descendants of historical figures like the Peshwas and Mastani claimed these films distorted history and disrespected their lineage. In some regions, screenings were cancelled, especially in Pune.

The Padmaavat controversy, although not directly targeting Ranveer, became a national issue. Director Sanjay Leela Bhansali was assaulted, sets were vandalised, and Deepika Padukone faced threats. Ranveer and Deepika were dating at the time.

When Ranveer went nude

Ranveer’s boldness landed him in trouble when he posed completely nude for the cover of Paper magazine. While many admired the photos, others filed complaints alleging the images “hurt women’s sentiments” and “insulted modesty.” A police complaint was registered under obscenity and IT laws. Ranveer later recorded his statement with Mumbai Police in response to the summons.
