Parts of suburban Mumbai on Tuesday evening received 19 mm rainfall in just one hour of downpour but the Mumbai local train and traffic movement in city remained unaffected, officials said.
According to the Mumbai civic body, Mumbai received light to moderate rainfall on Tuesday evening between 6 pm and 7 pm across various parts of the city. The highest rainfall was recorded at Kala Killa Municipal School in Dharavi, which received 19 mm of rain.
In the central parts of the city, Pratiksha Nagar in Sion recorded 16 mm, while the F/N Ward Office and Dadar Fire Station reported 10 mm of rainfall, it said.
Eastern suburbs of Mumbai also received light showers. The S Ward Office, Building Proposal Office, and Collector Colony Municipal School received 15 mm of rain. Other areas such as Maravali Municipal School in Chembur recorded 14 mm, MPS Maharashtra School had 12 mm, and Powai areas such as MCMCR and Paspoli Municipal School saw rainfall between 10 and 11 mm, civic officials said.
Western suburbs, including Goregaon and Aarey, received up to 16 mm of rain, the BMC said.
Despite the showers, there were no reports of water logging, no tree branch falls, and train services remained normal, according to officials. CCTV monitoring also showed no major issues on the roads during the hour of rainfall.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said that the situation remained under control and no complaints were reported during the monitoring period.
Earlier in the day, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) had predicted rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds in Mumbai and Thane district.
In a nowcast warning, issued by the IMD Mumbai at 5 pm on Tuesday, the weather department said thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and light to moderate rain are likely to occur in isolated areas of Mumbai and Thane over the next three hours.
A yellow warning was issued by the IMD for Mumbai and Thane districts, cautioning residents about possible thunderstorms, rain, and gusty winds.
“Wind speeds may reach between 30 to 40 kmph, and residents are advised to take precautions to stay safe during the period,” the weather department said.
The IMD has urged the public to avoid open areas, stay indoors if possible.
“The recent thunderstorm activity and rainfall over Interior Maharashtra and Konkan is mainly due to a troughing pattern in the easterly winds at lower levels. This, combined with increased moisture incursion and higher daytime temperatures, has created favourable conditions for storm development,” a weather department official said on Tuesday.
