Palghar authorities demolish 49,000 sq ft of illegal constructions in two days

Unauthorised constructions and buildings categorised as `highly dangerous` have been removed from 49,115 square feet area of land in Vasai and Virar areas of Maharashtra`s Palghar district, the local civic body said, reported news agency PTI.

The drive against such constructions was conducted over the last two days at several locations, the Vasai Virar City Municipal Corporation said in a release on Wednesday night, reported PTI.

The eviction action was taken against several unauthorised and `highly dangerous` buildings, including chawls (row tenements) and commercial establishments, during the drive, it said.

Containers with oil-like substance wash ashore in Palghar; work to remove them underway

In another incident, work on removing three containers carrying oil-like substance that were washed ashore in Maharashtra`s Palghar district is underway, an official said on Monday, reported PTI.

The three containers had come ashore due to waves in Shirgaon-Usbhav and Satpati Dandipada on Sunday, the official said, reported PTI.

“On receiving information, Satpati police reached the spot and also called in personnel from the Customs, Coast Guard, Maritime Board and forest departments. The containers appear to have some oil-like substance, raising concerns of possible environmental hazard. One container has been safely moved to the shore with the help of a crane as per the tide forecast,” he said, reported PTI.

Work is underway to remove the remaining two containers, he said, adding Palghar Superintendent of Police Yatish Deshmukh visited the site to oversee the operation.

Two held with illicit liquor, other equipment of Rs 30 lakh in Palghar

Meanwhile, police have seized illicit liquor and other equipment valued at Rs 30.7 lakh and arrested two persons after busting two manufacturing units of the contraband in Maharashtra`s Palghar district, officials said on Tuesday, reported PTI.

Based on inputs, the police raided the two units on Panju island in Vasai area on Monday, senior police inspector Aviraj Kurhade said, reported PTI.

They seized 150 litres of liquor and equipment used in brewing valued at Rs 17.8 lakh from one of the units.

A 50-year-old man found manufacturing country liquor at the unit was arrested while his associate managed to escape, the official said, reported PTI.

During the raid at another unit, the police seized liquor and other materials of Rs 12.9 lakh and arrested a 34-year-old man engaged in large-scale liquor brewing there, he said.

Separate cases have been registered in connection with the two raids under the Maharashtra Prohibition Act, the police added.
