The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced the launch of an ‘Adopt-a-Road’ initiative aimed at ensuring the regular cleaning and maintenance of roads across Mumbai city and its suburbs.
The project, spearheaded by the Solid Waste Management Department, seeks to promote sustainable upkeep and accountability for over 730 major roads in the metropolitan region.
Under this initiative, 246 junior supervisors will each be assigned at least three major roads or routes, taking full responsibility for their maintenance. The programme includes comprehensive activities such as surface cleaning, removal of debris and construction waste, and the regular washing and maintenance of medians, dividers, footpaths, and service roads. Roads will also be periodically washed to reduce dust levels, and misting machines will be used for water spraying.
In addition, murals and public art under flyovers and at key junctions will be cleaned as part of the effort.
The initiative follows the directives of Municipal Commissioner and Administrator Bhushan Gagrani, under the guidance of Additional Municipal Commissioner (City) Dr Ashwini Joshi and Deputy Commissioner (Solid Waste Management) Kiran Dighavkar, who is overseeing the execution of various citywide cleanliness measures.
Dr Joshi said the initiative aims to strengthen on-ground accountability and participation among Solid Waste Management Department staff while ensuring long-term maintenance of public spaces. She also stressed the importance of citizen cooperation, urging Mumbaikars to keep their surroundings clean and contribute to the civic body’s mission of maintaining a cleaner and healthier city.
BMC speeds up Goregaon-Mulund Tunnel Project in Mumbai, says shaft launching to begin soon
The Goregaon-Mulund Link Road (GMLR) Project in Mumbai has gained pace with the excavation of the ‘launching shaft’ progressing rapidly at Dadasaheb Phalke Chitranagari in Goregaon, the BMC said on Friday.
An official statement said that the ongoing works were inspected by Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) Abhijit Bangar, who instructed officials to ensure the project is completed within the set timeline.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is executing the massive infrastructure project, which will connect Mumbai’s eastern and western suburbs through twin underground tunnels.
The tunnels, each 5.3 kilometres long with three lanes, will be excavated using two advanced Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs).
All parts of one TBM, imported from Japan in 77 containers, have arrived at the site and are being assembled at Josh Maidan in Goregaon. The second TBM is expected to reach the site by December 2025, with assembly work scheduled to finish by October 2026. The tunnelling is expected to begin by August 2026, giving the project a major boost, according to the Mumbai civic body.
