Mumbai weather updates: IMD issues yellow alert for thunderstorms and heavy rain

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a generally cloudy sky with moderate to heavy rainfall across Mumbai and its suburbs on Tuesday. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are very likely during the day.

A yellow alert has been issued, warning of heavy rain, thunderstorms with lightning, and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30–40 kmph at isolated locations.

High tide is expected at 7:48 am with a height of 3.50 metres and again at 7:27 pm at 2.90 metres. Low tide will occur at 2:06 pm at 2.27 metres, while on September 17, the next low tide is expected at 2:00 am at 1.44 metres.

In the 24-hour period between 8 am on September 15 and 8 am on September 16, Mumbai city recorded 39.35 mm of rainfall, the eastern suburbs received 35.17 mm, and the western suburbs registered 40.34 mm.

Meanwhile, the water levels in lakes supplying drinking water to Mumbai have risen following heavy rainfall in their catchment areas. According to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) data, the combined stock in the seven reservoirs that provide water to the city now stands at 98.82 per cent.

As per the BMC on Tuesday (September 16), the collective water stock in these reservoirs is 14,30,345 million litres, which amounts to 98.82 per cent of their total capacity.

The BMC supplies drinking water daily from Upper Vaitarna, Modak Sagar, Tansa, Middle Vaitarna, Bhatsa, Vehar, and Tulsi lakes.

Of these, Tansa has 98.41 per cent water stock, Modak Sagar 100 per cent, Middle Vaitarna 98.93 per cent, Upper Vaitarna 99.15 per cent, Bhatsa 98.51 per cent, Vehar 100 per cent and Tulsi 100 per cent.

Lower (Modak Sagar), Middle and Upper Vaitarna lakes, along with Tansa, supply water to the western suburbs from Dahisar Check Naka to Bandra and to the western parts of the city from Mahim to Malabar Hill.

Bhatsa, Vehar, and Tulsi together form the Bhatsa system. Water from this system is treated at the Panjarpur Water Treatment Plant and distributed to the eastern parts of Mumbai, covering the eastern suburbs from Mulund Check Naka to Sion and further to Mazgaon.
