The Ghatkopar police have busted a three-member gang that allegedly roamed around in a tempo and robbed bikers and scooter riders at knifepoint during late-night hours.
The latest incident occurred around 1.30 am on November 11 near the Home Guard Training Centre, Ghatkopar West. The complainant, Suraj Dethe, an employee of a private firm, was riding pillion on a scooter driven by his friend Yash Kamble when a three-wheeler tempo suddenly approached from the opposite direction and stopped across their path
The main accused, Hussain Aslam Memon alias Genda, 35, a tempo driver from Titwala, along with his aides Munna Ramvilas Sharma, 29, and Dilshaduddin Shaikh, 20, targeted riders in deserted areas and fled with stolen vehicles and valuables.
Panic ensued as nearby rickshaw drivers fled the scene. Unlike in previous robberies, the accused did not load the scooter into the tempo during this incident. However, during interrogation, Memon allegedly confessed that in earlier cases, the gang had used the tempo to transport stolen scooters and later dismantled them for spare parts
Their latest strike took place around 1.30 am on November 11 near the Home Guard Training Centre, Ghatkopar, when complainant Suraj Mahadev Dethe, 24, was robbed of his Honda Dio scooter and mobile phone at knifepoint.
Police tracked the suspects using CCTV footage, technical surveillance, and intelligence inputs, arresting them on November 12. The stolen mobile phone and scooter were subsequently recovered. Officers added that Memon had previously lived in the Ghatkopar area, where he is suspected to have surveyed potential targets. Police are now verifying their involvement in other unsolved cases. Police used CCTV footage and technical surveillance to trace and arrest the trio on November 12, recovering the stolen items. Investigations revealed that Memon had previously lived in Ghatkopar and was involved in similar offences across Mumbai and Thane.
