A Newborn baby girl was found abandoned in a nullah at Ashokvan, Borivli East, late on Sunday night. “The police station received a call from residents who spotted a baby lying in the nullah — alive and crying. Our night-shift officers rushed to the spot, rescued the infant, and immediately took her to Savitribai Phule BMC Hospital in Borivli East,” said Senior PI Sarje Rao Patil of Dahisar police station.
Hospital staff said the baby was in critical condition when brought in. “She appeared to be just a day old, and her umbilical cord wasn’t even properly cut. We warmed her, gave first aid, and revived her. Since our hospital doesn’t have a neonatal ICU, we shifted her to Shatabdi Hospital, where a NICU bed was available,” said a doctor at Savitribai Phule BMC Hospital.
At Shatabdi Hospital, the baby is now stable and under observation. “There was a scar-like injury on her head, so we conducted a haematoma ultrasound — results were normal. She also had bruises on her knees. The baby is on IV fluids and RT feeding and is being monitored in the NICU,” said Dr Kiran Tandel, assistant medical officer at Shatabdi Hospital.
Police have deployed a female constable at the hospital for round-the-clock security and are scanning CCTV footage from nearby areas to identify the parents or those responsible for abandoning the baby.
