One labourer died and another is in critical condition after the two fell into a septic tank while cleaning a Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) at a building in Powai on Wednesday morning, officials said.
According to the Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB), the incident was reported around 10:42 am from the Raj Grand Doi Building, located opposite Hiranandani Hospital in Powai. The two men, both labourers from Ultra Tech Pvt. Ltd., were reportedly engaged in cleaning work inside the STP when they suffocated due to toxic gases and got trapped inside.
Teams from the MFB, police, 108 ambulance service, and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) ward staff were mobilised for the rescue operation. Both workers were pulled out and rushed to Hiranandani Hospital, officials confirmed.
Doctors at the hospital said one of the workers, identified as Phulchand Kumar (28), is in critical condition and has been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The second victim, an unidentified male aged around 20 to 25 years, was declared brought dead.
Further investigation into the incident is underway.
Two drown in Mahim creek
In another case, a man and a transgender person drowned after they jumped into the Mahim creek in Mumbai on Tuesday, police said, reported PTI.
According to the police, Irshad Asif Shaikh (22), alias Zara, a resident of Bandra West and Kalandar Altaf Khan (20) had entered into an argument on the creek bridge between Mahim and Bandra, reported PTI.
Shaikh jumped into the creek, and Khan followed to rescue him. But both drowned, they said.
Fire brigade officials, local police, and a team from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) reached the spot and initiated the rescue efforts, an official said.
The search operation was halted later in the evening due to poor visibility and will continue on Wednesday, he added.
Boy drowns, two missing after slipping into canal in Karnataka`s Vijayapura
Meanwhile, a 16-year-old boy drowned, and two others went missing after they slipped into a canal on Tuesday, police said, reported PTI.
Basamma Konnur (21), Santosh Konnur (16) and Ravi Konnur (15), all relatives from Muddebihal town in Vijayapura district, accidentally fell into a canal under the Krishna Bhagya Jala Nigam Limited project near Shirol village, police said, reported PTI.
Fire and police personnel launched a search operation and recovered the body of Santosh Konnur. The search is on for the remaining two, police added.
