Mumbai Police on Monday said that the city was on precautionary high alert following a high-intensity explosion near Red Fort Metro Station in Delhi.
The blast in Delhi prompted Mumbai Police to step up security across the city, with senior officers directing all units to remain on heightened alert. Though no specific threat to Mumbai has been reported so far, officials said the precautionary measures were necessary given the sensitivity of the incident and the metropolis’s history with terror attacks.
According to police sources, all major transport hubs, religious places, markets and coastal areas have come under increased surveillance. Quick Response Teams have been placed on alert, while patrol units in all five regions have been instructed to maintain continuous rounds. Intelligence units have also been asked to monitor online chatter and verify any suspicious movement or communication.
Local police stations have been told to conduct surprise checks at hotels, lodges and rented accommodation, and to verify the identities of new tenants and outstation visitors. Anti-sabotage squads and bomb detection teams have been kept on standby across the city.
All police personnel in Mumbai have been instructed to remain on heightened alert.
As a precautionary measure, police carried out nakabandis at several locations across the city. Officers deployed at sensitive and high-security points have also been directed to stay vigilant.
Mumbai Police Commissioner Deven Bharti confirmed that the force has been placed on precautionary alert in the city following the blast in Delhi.
Senior police inspectors and zonal deputy commissioners have been told to enhance vigilance in their respective jurisdictions. Police have been asked to keep a close watch on crowded areas and sensitive locations. All senior inspectors have been instructed to ensure tighter security arrangements at key spots within their limits.
“Whenever an incident of this nature occurs in the country, we activate our layered security protocol. All field units have been instructed to remain vigilant,” a senior police officer said.
Officials added that security arrangements will remain tightened until further instructions.
