A late-night ride turned tragic for a Dharavi family when a 29-year-old man and his mother were hit by a speeding dumper near Sion-Mahim Link Road in Mahim West, on Monday night. The mother, identified as 55-year-old Aaliya Bano, allegedly died in the accident, while her son, Mohammad Tabrez Khan, sustained injuries. According to the police, the accident occurred around 11.45 pm when Khan was riding the scooter with his mother riding pillion. A dumper came from behind at high speed, driven recklessly, and rammed into their two-wheeler and both were flung onto the road. As they fell, the dumper’s wheel ran over Bano, causing fatal head injuries.

Passersby rushed her to Sion Hospital, where doctors declared her brought dead. Khan suffered injuries to his head and hand but survived. He is still in hospital receiving treatment, said police. Police have booked the dumper driver, who fled the spot, under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including Section 106 (causing death by negligence), along with rash driving and Motor Vehicles Act violations.

Efforts are underway to trace and arrest the absconding driver. Bano would often visit her son’s home in Dharavi to collect food prepared by her daughter-in-law for herself and her husband, who stayed separately in Mahim. On the night of the accident, her son offered to drop her back after she picked up the dinner. Khan works at a small T-shirt manufacturing unit in Dharavi.
