Mumbai`s first fully underground metro corridor spans 33.5 km and has 27 stations — 26 underground and one at-grade. Mumbai Metro Line-3 is likely to reduce the north-south commute time to under an hour, connecting Aarey in the western suburbs to South Mumbai’s business and administrative hubs.
Trains will operate every five minutes, with a design speed of 95 kilometre per hour (kmph). The Aqua Line is expected to significantly ease pressure on suburban rail services by around 15 per cent and provide direct connectivity to key financial centres such as Nariman Point, Fort, Cuffe Parade, Lower Parel, Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) and SEEPZ/MIDC.
The Phase II-B section — from Acharya Atre Chowk to Cuffe Parade — was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday. It spans 10.99 km and has 11 underground stations. The new section has been developed at a cost of Rs 12,195 crore.
The Rs 37,276-crore project is expected to deliver major environmental benefits — it is likely to save 3.54 lakh litres of fuel daily and cut traffic congestion and noise pollution by 35 per cent. Around 23,000 trees have been planted under compensatory afforestation, with mangrove restoration also underway.
The corridor features full-height platform screen doors, air-conditioned trains and barrier-free infrastructure for persons with disabilities. Passengers can use the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) for seamless and contactless travel across different public transport systems.
