Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC) Chairman Dr Surendra Sanas has informed members that the Mahalaxmi racecourse will soon have a new clubhouse. In a letter dated August 9 to the Mahalaxmi club’s member base, the chief of the racing body stated, “It is with heartfelt gratitude that I write to you on behalf of your committee. Having secured several key permissions from the BMC and other government departments and with the remaining approvals expected in due course, we are delighted to share a truly historic milestone as we now stand on the threshold of creating our new clubhouse at the iconic Mumbai race course.”
The letter stated that a distant dream was on the verge of becoming a landmark reality. This is not just a milestone for our club, it is a significant moment for the city of Mumbai as well. With these approvals in place, we will soon begin work on a state-of-the-art clubhouse in the Second Enclosure, envisioned to be one of the finest in the country.
Some details in the letter said, “We are proposing approximately 40,000 sq mt of built up area that would feature world-class amenities including a swimming pool, gymnasium, restaurants, a bar and lounge, business centre, kids’ zone, two floors of underground parking, card room, sports facilities including paddle tennis, lawn tennis, badminton, pickle ball, rooms (70 plus) and more.”
he chairman’s letter highlighted a few indivTiduals in particular to be thanked for their efforts, but praised the entire committee, citing especially its “unity and resolve” for this endeavour. The chairman’s communication concluded on a cheery note that the sport of racing is also “flourishing.” The turf club’s bigwigs stressed that the new clubhouse will not mean taking away any green, open space, but will be built on the space that currently has two derelict spectator stands between the existing Mini Turf Club and helipad at Mahalaxmi.
