Mumbai Local Train Network Set for Major Upgrade with 18-Car Trials Starting January

For the millions of commuters who rely on the Mumbai Local Train network daily, a significant relief measure is on the horizon. The Western Railway (WR) is poised to begin crucial trials for 18-car local trains starting in January 2025. This development marks a pivotal step in expanding capacity on one of the world’s busiest suburban rail corridors.

Expanding the Lifeline of Mumbai

As reported by Lokmaha News, the Western Railway aims to complete the extension of platforms to accommodate these longer trains by the end of December 2024. Currently, the suburban network primarily operates 12-car and 15-car services. The shift to 18-car rakes is expected to increase passenger carrying capacity by approximately 25% compared to the standard 12-car trains, offering a much-needed respite from the notorious peak-hour overcrowding.

The focus of this upgrade is the busy Churchgate to Virar corridor. Officials have confirmed that the infrastructure work required to support the longer trains—including track realignment and signal positioning—is nearing completion.

Infrastructure and Technical Trials

Before the 18-car Mumbai Local Train services can be opened to the public, rigorous testing is required. According to sources at Lokmaha News, the trials scheduled for January will focus on several technical parameters:

  • Signal Sighting: Ensuring drivers have clear visibility of signals from the longer rake.
  • Platform Alignment: Verifying that the train aligns perfectly with the extended platforms at all stations.
  • Overhead Equipment (OHE): Testing the electrical lines to ensure they can support the extended power draw and pantograph positioning.

The project, which has been in the pipeline for several years, targets a completion date of March 2025 for full commercial operations. The extension work involves 26 stations between Churchgate and Virar, ensuring that the entire line is synchronized for the upgrade.

Boosting Speed and Efficiency

Beyond capacity, there is an operational efficiency angle to this upgrade. The introduction of 18-car trains is being synchronised with efforts to increase the sectional speed of the Mumbai Local Train network. The aim is to enhance the speed from the current 90 kmph to 105 kmph, which would improve turnaround times and frequency.

With the platform work practically finished, the upcoming trials will be the final hurdle. If successful, Mumbai’s commuters can look forward to a more spacious and efficient journey by the first quarter of next year. Lokmaha News will continue to track the progress of these trials as the city prepares for this significant transit upgrade.
