Mumbai-based activist Godfrey Pimenta has complained to the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), alleging that a ready-mix concrete (RMC) plant near a residential area in Kurla is generating excessive dust and air pollution. According to Pimenta, emissions from the plant pose a serious health risk to nearby residents.
On Thursday, a resident from Sunderbaug Lane, Kamani, Kurla, recorded a video showing dust pollution allegedly caused by the plant and shared it with Pimenta. Acting on this evidence, he filed complaints with the MPCB, BMC, and the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC).

Speaking to mid-day, Pimenta said, “The operations show clear disregard for environmental norms. Dust and air pollution remain unchecked, noise from machinery continues day and night, and concrete slurry is flowing onto public roads and drains. Heavy trucks block the narrow lane, causing traffic and safety issues. There are no visible pollution-control measures, and both MPCB and BMC have failed to enforce compliance.”
He added that the situation poses significant health risks, especially for children, senior citizens, and people with respiratory issues. “The plant seems to be operating in violation of MPCB norms. We demand immediate inspection, verification of permissions, strict action for non-compliance, and active BMC monitoring.”
Residents echoed the concerns. Sanjay Tiwari said, “Two private RMC plants operate here, and dust and air pollution are a serious health risk for families, senior citizens, and school-going children.”
Sunderbaug Lane resident Sunil Gajare added, “Despite several complaints, authorities have not acted. Residents are forced to inhale cement dust daily, affecting their health.” An MPCB official, requesting anonymity, told this newspaper, “We will look into the issue.”
