Mumbai: Husband, in-laws held after woman dies; father alleges dowry harassment

Around a year after her marriage, a 24-year-old woman has died allegedly under suspicious circumstances in Mumbai following which the police have arrested her husband and in-laws after her father alleged dowry harassment, officials said.

The complaint filed by Radheshyam Satyanarayan Gupta, a resident of Hariharpur village in Jaunpur district, states that his 24-year-old daughter, Neha Gupta, was married to Arvind Manoj Gupta on November 26, 2024.

Gupta alleged that he had given Rs 9 lakh in cash, around 18 tolas of gold, 2 kilograms of silver, and household items as dowry during the wedding.

Neha moved to her husband’s residence in Khar (West) area of Mumbai, after marriage and initially, the relationship was smooth, but within two months, she allegedly started facing harassment from her husband Arvind, father-in-law Manoj Gupta, mother-in-law Meera Gupta, and sisters-in-law Preeti and Pinky over demands for additional dowry, cash, and gifts, the police complaint said.

Gupta stated that his daughter was also subjected to physical and verbal abuse.

In December 2024, Neha became pregnant, but in February 2025, her health allegedly deteriorated and she was admitted to a hospital.

She allegedly told her mother that her in-laws had forced her to terminate the pregnancy, according to the FIR filed 54-year-old businessman.

The FIR further stated that over the following months, Neha’s family filed multiple complaints at the Khar Police Station and with the State Women’s Commission. Though a reconciliation was arranged through community mediation, the harassment reportedly continued.

Neha had informed her parents that her husband and in-laws were allegedly mixing intoxicating substances in her food and forcing her to eat them, the complaint states.

On October 16, 2025, Neha’s father-in-law reportedly called her parents to inform them that she had been admitted to Cooper Hospital in Mumbai due to serious illness. When her family arrived, they were told that Neha had died, the complaint further states.

Radheshyam Gupta has accused his daughter’s husband and his family members of abetment to suicide and causing death by cruelty related to dowry demands. 

An FIR was registered against his son-in-law and his family. Police are investigating the case, said an official.
