The Borivli police have arrested a 47-year-old man based on a complaint filed by a diamond merchant from Gujarat who accused him of embezzlement. The accused, Vikram Vasantbhai Sanghvi, is a resident of Navsari in Gujarat and works for a diamond trader in Gujarat. According to the complainant, Shil Vipulbhai Koradia, 21, a Surat-based diamond trader, the accused was supposed to deliver a parcel of diamonds worth Rs 3 crore from Gujarat to a merchant in Mumbai.
According to Karodia, his associates had handed over the parcel to Sanghvi at Navsari railway station for delivery. However, upon reaching Borivli, the packet in which the diamonds were kept was missing. On September 5, Sanghvi travelled on the Vande Bharat train and alighted at Borivli station, holding a carry bag, police said. “After stepping out of the station, he went to a shop to buy a cigarette. While taking out his wallet from the bag, he realised that the packet in which the diamonds were kept was missing. He searched the bag but couldn’t find it,” said an officer.
Following this, Sanghvi immediately called the person to whom the diamonds were to be delivered in Mumbai and asked him to come to Borivli station. Both later checked all the items in the bag one by one, but the diamond packet was not found, said police. The merchant from Mumbai then informed Koradia about the incident, who filed a complaint against Sanghvi. Police said that based on the complaint, they arrested Sangvi, and upon questioning, he allegedly failed to provide satisfactory answers, raising the suspicion of embezzlement.
Following his arrest, Sanghvi was kept in police custody and was produced before the Borivli court on Friday, which further remanded in police custody till 24 September. The investigation is being carried out under the guidance of DCP Sandeep Jadhav and Senior Inspector Madhusudan Naik. The arrest was carried out by Police Inspector Milind Nagpure (crime), along with a detection team, including PSI Rajesh Kadam and PSI Indrajeet Patil.
“The accused has claimed innocence, stating he does not know how the diamonds went missing from the bag. Suspicion arose as the wallet kept in his bag was untouched, while only the diamonds disappeared,” said an officer from Borivli police station. “We are now examining CCTV footage from the Vande Bharat train, Borivli station, and Navsari station. We are also checking his call detail records,” said the officer. “We are investigating who Sanghvi met and who he spoke to before and after travelling from Navsari to Mumbai. Sangvi is currently the prime suspect in this case,” the officer added.
