Mumbai: Driver runs over on-duty constable during Chembur night patrol, arrested

A constable attached to the Chembur police station was injured after being run over by a car during night patrol duty late on Tuesday. The injured, identified as Constable Sachin Patil, 40, is part of the police beat marshal team and has been serving in Chembur for the past two years.  According to police, the incident took place around 10.30 pm on Tuesday on Road No. 4 near Gandhi Maidan.

Patil and his team were on night patrolling duty when they noticed a white WagonR car parked suspiciously by the roadside with two men inside. “When Patil knocked on the car window to check if the occupants were consuming alcohol or drugs, they began acting suspiciously. In an attempt to flee, the driver allegedly ran the vehicle over Patil,” said a police officer.

The constable sustained leg injury and was rushed to Rajawadi Hospital, where he was treated and later discharged. He has been granted medical leave for complete recovery. Following the incident, police launched a manhunt and, after extensive tracing, arrested the accused driver, Mangesh Divte, 35, a resident of Siddharth Colony, Chembur

The WagonR has been seized, confirmed Rajesh Kewale, senior police inspector of Chembur police station. Police are yet to determine whether Divte was under the influence of alcohol; his medical test results are awaited. Divte has been booked under Section 109 (attempt to murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). His friend, who was with him inside the car during the crime, is yet to be found. “The search for him is on; he will be arrested as well,” said Kewale.
