A 27-year-old woman from Darjeeling was allegedly found dead in an apartment in Antop Hill in eastern Mumbai, on Tuesday morning, police officials said.
Police said she worked as a domestic help at the flat where she was found dead.
According to officials, the deceased was employed at a flat in the Antop Hill area, where she also resided.
The incident came to light around 8 am, after which the Antop Hill Police rushed to the spot.
An ambulance arrived shortly afterwards, and the body was sent to Sion Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
Preliminary inquiries revealed that gold jewellery worth Rs 10 lakh, belonging to the lady of the house, had recently gone missing. Sources said the employer had been repeatedly questioning the victim about the missing ornaments, and it is suspected that the sustained confrontation may have caused her severe distress.
Police suspect that the woman committed suicide, though officials also stated that the exact cause of death is still under investigation.
An officer from Antop Hill Police Station confirmed that an Accidental Death Report (ADR) has been registered. Statements from the house owner, neighbours, and other domestic staff in the building are being recorded. The police are awaiting the post-mortem and forensic reports before determining whether any foul play was involved.
