Mumbai: Central Railway General Manager Vijay Kumar passes away

Central Railway General Manager Vijay Kumar, who assumed charge of office just over a month ago, passed away in Mumbai in the early hours of Tuesday.

“Our beloved General Manager, Central Railway, Shri Vijay Kumar, passed away this morning. Central Railway mourns the loss of a noble soul, an efficient administrator, and an inspiring leader whose contributions to Indian Railways will always be remembered amongst us,” stated an official message by the CR on social media.

Kumar, an officer of the 1988 batch of the Indian Railway Service of Mechanical Engineers, assumed charge as General Manager of CR on October 1. Before moving to the CR, Kumar served as the general manager of Chittaranjan Locomotive Works, where he led production of a record 700 locomotives in 2024-25. 

Throughout his illustrious career spanning over 35 years, he has held several crucial positions in the Indian Railways. Kumar had also contributed to the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) as its executive director and director (rolling stock). Kumar was also part of semi-high-speed corridor development and supervised speed trials of the Spanish-designed Talgo trains during his stint.

Kumar had done his B Tech in Mechanical Engineering from Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh. He had also undergone training in Advanced Management programmes in Singapore and Malaysia.
