Mumbai air quality stays moderate at 159 on Diwali eve; haze blankets skies

On the eve of Diwali 2025, Mumbai’s air quality index (AQI) stood at 159, remaining in the moderate category despite firecrackers lighting up the city and a haze covering the skies. 

According to the SAMEER app dashboard, residents with breathing disorders, lung diseases, and heart ailments are likely to develop breathing discomfort.  

As per the Central Pollution Control Board’s SAMEER app, many areas across Mumbai remained in the `moderate` category.

Vasai recorded `good` air quality with an AQI of 87. 

Ghatkopar, Sion, and Andheri recorded `moderate` air quality, with an AQI of 156, 129, and 166, respectively.

Meanwhile, Colaba and Deonar recorded `poor` air quality, with an AQI of 265 and 214, respectively, while Bandra-Kurla Complex was in the `very poor` category with an AQI of 311.

According to data from the SAMEER app, Navi Mumbai recorded air quality in the `moderate` category with an AQI of 178, while Thane registered a `good` AQI of 97.

The air quality index from 0 to 100 is considered `good`, 100 to 200 `moderate`, 200 to 300 `poor`, 300 to 400 `very poor` and from 400 to 500 or above `severe`.

On Thursday, Mumbai had recorded `good` AQI at 88, while on Wednesday and Friday, it remained in the `moderate` category, recording AQI of 130 and 122.

By evening, a thick blanket of haze enveloped the city as the city continued to reel under extreme heat conditions. Both the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) Colaba and Santacruz observatories recorded dry and humid weather.

According to the latest Mumbai weather updates from IMD, the Colaba weather station, representative of the Island City, recorded a maximum temperature of 35 degrees Celsius, 1.3 degrees Celsius above normal, while the minimum temperature stood at 26.4 degrees Celsius. Relative humidity was measured at 86 per cent.

In Santacruz, the mercury rose slightly higher, with a maximum temperature of 35.8 degrees Celsius, 1.5 degrees Celsius above normal, and a minimum of 24.6 degrees Celsius. Humidity levels were recorded at 75 per cent.

Despite the relatively high humidity, no rainfall was observed at either observatory.

Mumbai is likely to record a maximum temperature of 35 degrees Celsius throughout the week.
