A 27-year-old woman from Darjeeling allegedly died by suicide inside an Antop Hill apartment where she worked as domestic help. Police said the woman also lived in the flat and was found dead around 8 am on Tuesday.
An ambulance was called, and the body was sent to Sion Hospital for post-mortem examination. According to investigators, gold jewellery worth Rs 10 lakh belonging to the employer had recently gone missing.
Sources said the woman had been questioned multiple times about the ornaments, which may have caused her emotional distress. Police suspect the pressure and humiliation could have driven her to take the extreme step, though the exact cause of death will be confirmed after forensic tests.
A senior officer from Antop Hill police station said an Accidental Death Report (ADR) has been registered. “We are recording statements from the house owner, neighbours, and other domestic staff. The post-mortem and forensic reports are awaited before we draw any conclusion,” the officer said.
