Mithun Chakraborty has been a part of the film industry for decades and has played a wide variety of roles. Apart from movies, the National Award-winning actor has also been active in politics since the 1970s. While he is currently a member of the ruling BJP, he was once a part of the Marxist Party of India. Recently, during a media interaction, the veteran actor expressed his interest in playing Cuban revolutionary leader Che Guevara.
Mithun`s dream role
During the interaction, when asked about the kind of roles he would like to take up, Mithun said, “People want me to play Osho. But from my heart, I want to play Che Guevara, the revolutionary leader.”
Ernesto “Che” Guevara was an Argentine Marxist revolutionary, physician, author, guerrilla leader, diplomat, politician and military theorist. A major figure of the Cuban Revolution, his stylized visage has become a countercultural symbol of rebellion and global insignia in popular culture.
Mithun on The Bengal Files controversy
The senior actor will next be seen playing a pivotal role in Vivek Agnihotri’s controversial film The Bengal Files. The movie is based on the Calcutta Riots of 1946, and its trailer has described the incidents as a “Hindu genocide.”
The film has faced significant resistance, with reports claiming that the trailer launch event in Kolkata was blocked by the TMC. Responding strongly to the criticism, Mithun said, “Why are they calling it a propaganda film? If you’re making a film to tell the truth, does that become a propaganda tool? This is the problem with so-called secularism and pseudo-intellectualism!”
He further added, “It’s because of secularists and pseudo-intellectuals that controversies like these happen. Who are these secularists? One eats beef and the other eats pork. The one who shouldn’t touch the other [food item] becomes a secularist? True secularism is when one eats both.”
Mithun also addressed the controversy around the trailer launch being halted in Kolkata. He questioned the peoplw who are attempting to stop the film`s release. “All of it was pre-planned. How could they react so strongly to a trailer they hadn’t even watched? The truth showcased in this film chronicles events that took place before I was even born. I didn’t know about them. History states that killings took place in Noakhali. But why they happened, no one knew. No one has read about the Great Calcutta Killings. Aapko sachchai jaan’ne mein takleef kya hai?”
The Bengal Files directed by Vivek Agnihotri will hit theatres on September 5.
