Man from Bihar held in Thane with charas worth Rs 31 lakh

An official on Tuesday said that the police have arrested a man from Bihar and seized more than 3 kg of charas worth Rs 31 lakh from him in Thane city, reported news agency PTI.

The narcotic was seized on Monday (June 30) in the Kopri area after the Crime Branch laid a trap, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Amarsingh Jadhav told reporters.

The action was initiated after senior police inspector Salil Bhosale of the Crime Branch`s Wagle Unit received a tip-off about a suspected narcotics deal, he said.

“The accused was expected to arrive in front of a hotel to sell charas to his customers. Our team laid a trap and apprehended the suspect at the location,” said the DCP, reported PTI.

The arrested individual has been identified as Mohammad Aftab Alam Mohammad Salim Akhtar, 34, a resident of Chhapra in Bihar, reported PTI.

Jadhav said 3.096 kilograms of charas, with an estimated market value of Rs 30,96,000, was seized from his possession.

Along with the drug, the police also recovered cash, a mobile phone, and other valuables worth an additional Rs 11,500, bringing the total seizure to Rs. 31,07,500, according to the DCP, reported PTI.

An offence has been registered against the accused at the Kopri police station under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

Two Punjab natives held with Rs 1 lakh heroin in Navi Mumbai

In another case, the police have arrested two men hailing from Punjab after seizing heroin valued at Rs 1.05 lakh from them in Maharashtra`s Navi Mumbai township, an official said on Tuesday, reported PTI.

Based on a tip-off, the police laid a trap near an under-construction bridge in the Panvel area of Navi Mumbai late Sunday night.

The two persons were apprehended and 35 gm of heroin, in ball and stone forms, was seized from their possession, Panvel City police station`s senior inspector Nitin Thakre said, reported PTI.

The accused have been identified as Satnam Singh Sukhdev Singh (31) and Sukhwinder Singh Muknar Singh (59), both residents of Tarn Taran in Punjab, the official said, reported PTI.

“The duo had come from outside the state and were found in possession of the contraband with the intention to distribute it illegally,” said Thakre.

The two men were arrested and booked under provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, the official said.

“Our preliminary probe indicates the arrested individuals were likely involved in a larger drug distribution chain. Investigations are ongoing to identify other possible links,” Thakre said.
