Winter has now slowly tightened its grip across Maharashtra, with several districts across the state recording a significant drop in minimum temperatures. Many regions on Friday woke up to cold mornings marked by clear skies, haze, and dry conditions, as per the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD).
As per the weather information shared by the IMD, temperatures in Jeur district dipped to the lowest at 10.0 degrees Celsius, followed closely by Beed at 10.1 degrees Celsius and Pune at 11 degrees Celsius.
The significant drop in temperatures across the state signalled a very strong wintry spell in parts of Maharashtra.
Apart from these districts, Jalgaon also experienced a chilly 11.3 degrees Celsius temperature on Friday during the early hours.
While Nashik recorded 11.6 degrees Celsius, the weather was significantly consistent with the cold wave pattern seen over the past week.
The IMD, while alerting about the cold weather conditions across Maharashtra, further highlighted that the humidity levels varied widely.
The humidity levels in Pune were recorded at 88 per cent, accompanied by haze and calm winds, while Jeur saw relatively dry conditions at 58 per cent humidity.
However, apart from the ghat regions, the coastal regions of Maharashtra remained comparatively warm.
As per IMD, Mumbai’s Santacruz weather station recorded a minimum of 17.4 degrees Celsius, while Colaba’s temperature stood relatively warmer at 22.4 degrees Celsius.
Mumbai Air Quality
With Mumbai experiencing relatively cold weather, recording minimum temperatures below 22 degrees Celsius and giving early risers clear skies, the air quality across the city does seem to be a concern.
The refreshing weather in Mumbai did come with a stark contrast. A thin but persistent layer of smog hung over the skyline, reducing visibility and dulling the otherwise tranquil morning. Despite the gentle breeze, pollution levels remained elevated, continuing a trend seen throughout the month.
Mumbai’s overall Air Quality Index (AQI) reached 143 on Friday morning, placing it in the “moderate” category. This reflects a significant deterioration from earlier this month, when the city recorded moderate air quality. Several localities—particularly industrial belts and densely populated areas—reported even higher pollution levels, underscoring the city’s ongoing environmental challenges.
According to AQI categorisation, 0-50 is `good`, 51-100 `satisfactory`, 101-200 `moderate`, 201-300 `poor`, 301-400 `very poor`, and 401-500 `severe`.
