The Maharashtra government will finalise the new three-language policy, as per the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, take a statewide public opinion on its implementation, officials said on Wednesday.
The state is now taking a consultative approach to finalising the new three-language policy.
A special committee led by Dr Narendra Jadhav has been formed to gather public opinion and prepare the best recommendations in the interest of students across the state, an official statement said.
It said that the committee held its first meeting on Wednesday.
Speaking after the meeting at Mantralaya in south Mumbai, Dr Jadhav said that Maharashtra has over 1.08 lakh schools and more than 2.12 crore students, and the aim is to ensure that any language policy takes into account the views and needs of this large and diverse group.
A dedicated website will be launched in the next 15 days, where a link will be provided for students, parents, educators, and citizens to submit their opinions. Two questionnaires will also be released – one general and one specifically for institutions related to the Marathi language.
The questionnaires will be sent to schools, colleges, elected representatives, and parent bodies. Additionally, political leaders who have spoken on the matter will be personally consulted within the next fortnight.
To gather broader public opinion, statewide consultations will be held at key locations including — Sambhajinagar (8 Oct), Nagpur (10 Oct), Kolhapur (30 Oct), Ratnagiri (31 Oct), Nashik (11 Nov), Pune (13 Nov), Solapur (21 Nov) and Mumbai (last week of Nov).
Jadhav said that the committee will also study how the three-language formula is being implemented in other states. After considering all views, the final report is expected to be submitted to the state government by December 5, 2025.
