Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) on Tuesday said that it will use the rapid-setting concrete on damaged roads in the district.
According o an official statement, the condition of the road from Kajupada and Chena village to Gaimukh Ghat has become extremely poor, causing major inconvenience to residents and commuters. To ensure that repairs last through the monsoon, Thane Municipal Commissioner Saurabh Rao has directed the immediate use of rapid hardening concrete to fix the damaged stretch.
The road from Fountain Hotel towards Gaimukh Ghat is in a critical state. Despite repairs using gravel and bitumen grouting, the surface keeps getting damaged again. This leads to slow traffic movement and forces vehicles to travel in the wrong direction. During peak hours, the traffic jam even affects the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Highway up to Chinchoti and Mira Road, it said.
In a meeting chaired by Rao, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Pankaj Shirsat highlighted the severe traffic disruptions caused by the poor condition of the road. Officials from Mira-Bhayander Municipal Corporation (MBMC) stated that the base of the road has eroded, and no repair work lasts long.
City Engineer Prashant Sonagra suggested using rapid hardening concrete, especially during the monsoon. This type of concrete sets quickly, allowing repairs without fully closing the road. The civic chief instructed the MBMC to immediately test this method. If successful, it can be used throughout the ghat area to improve traffic flow and reduce public inconvenience.
He further said that the experiment should be conducted within a four-hour window on one lane using all available resources and in coordination with local police.
The meeting was held at the TMC chief’s office and was attended by City Engineer Prashant Sonagra, DCP (Traffic) Pankaj Shirsat, Superintendent Engineer Siddharth Tambe, Deputy Commissioner Dinesh Tayde, Assistant City Engineer Vikas Dhole, Ghodbandar Road Coordinator Sanjay Kadam, and representatives from MBMC, MMRDA, and the Forest Department.
The meeting addressed the stalled road merging work on Ghodbunder Road due to the rains. MMRDA was instructed to immediately inspect and level the gaps between old and newly constructed roads. The Public Works Department was also told to complete urgent road repairs at Kasarvadavali, Owla Signal, and Kapurbawdi Flyover without delay.
