Maharashtra: Three run over by train on railway track in Pune

Three persons suspected to be engaged in mischief along a railway track in Pune were killed after being run over by a train, police said on Monday, reported news agency PTI.

The incident occurred near Manjari area on the outskirts of Pune city on Sunday night.

“As per preliminary information, five to six youth, aged between 18 and 20, were walking along the track, while a couple of them were sitting on it. It is suspected that while they were engaged in some mischief, a train struck three of them around 9 pm on Sunday,” an official from Hadapsar police station said, reported PTI.

The youth belonged to a nearby locality in Manjari, he said.

“We have registered an accidental death case and are probing the sequence of events,” the official said.

Earlier, Two commuters died after a speeding train near Sandhurst Road station ran over five people following disruptions due to a flash strike organised by railway workers at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) during the evening rush hours on November 6. Those mowed down by the train were walking on the tracks, as trains had halted for a long time due to the stir.

The agitation that brought Central Railway (CR) operations to a standstill was carried out in protest of the FIR filed against railway engineers in connection with the Mumbra tragedy, leading to the complete collapse of the timetable as no trains operated from CSMT between 5.50 pm and 6.45 pm, leading to chaos as all intermediate stations and leaving thousands of office-goers were stranded.

Chemical truck crashes into tree in Thane, damages autorickshaw and streetlight

In another incident, a container truck carrying chemicals rammed into a tree near a crossing in Maharashtra`s Thane city, damaging a streetlight pole and an autorickshaw and affecting traffic for about an hour, officials said on Monday, reported PTI.

No person was injured in the accident reported at 11.31 pm on Sunday, they said.

The tanker, heading from Dahej in Gujarat to Wagle Estate in Thane, lost control near the Teen Hath Naka and crashed into a roadside tree, Thane Municipal Corporation`s disaster management cell chief Yasin Tadvi said, reported PTI.

“A large branch of the tree fell on the container and then onto an autorickshaw moving ahead of it. The autorickshaw driver and the two passengers inside escaped without injuries. The three-wheeler`s roof was, however, damaged due to the impact,” he said, reported PTI.

The fallen tree branch also hit a nearby streetlight pole, which then collapsed, the official said.

The truck was carrying polymer dispersions, a non-toxic and non-inflammable chemical used in textile finishing, paper and packaging coatings, and construction materials, he said, reported PTI.

After being alerted, the police, fire brigade and disaster management cell staff reached the spot.

Traffic on the Nashik-Mumbai route was halted for about an hour and diverted via the service road, the official said.

Rescue personnel later removed the fallen tree branches, cleared the road, and restored normal traffic movement, he added.
