Madhur Bhandarkar files complaint over unauthorized use of Chandni Bar title

Madhur Bhandarkar’s Chandni Bar, starring Tabu, was a critically acclaimed film in 2001. Twenty-four years later, the film is getting a sequel, and the news was announced by the makers last week. Amid the excitement, the makers have found themselves in trouble after Madhur Bhandarkar lodged a complaint with the Indian Motion Picture Producers` Association (IMPPA) against producer Sandeep Singh and director Ajay Bahl for the unauthorized use of the title.

Madhur Bhandarkar lodges complaint

In a letter to Singh and his banner, the IMPPA said, “This is to inform you that we have received a complaint from our member, M/s Bhandarkar Entertainment, Mr Madhur Bhandarkar, that your company is using their registered title Chandni Bar for a sequel titled Chandni Bar Returns without obtaining the requisite authorisation or consent.”

They added, “Please note that the title Chandni Bar is a registered property of M/s Bhandarkar Entertainment. Any use of this title, in any form or medium, without their prior written approval constitutes unauthorised use and may invite appropriate action. Therefore, you are hereby advised to stop using the said title in any format with immediate effect.”

About Chandni Bar 2

Released in 2001, Chandni Bar marked Bhandarkar`s acclaimed entry into Bollywood. The film told the story of a bar dancer and explored the gritty life of the Mumbai underworld, sex work, and gun crime. Reports suggest that the makers are reimagining the critically acclaimed film for a modern audience. Chandni Bar 2 will be produced by Sandeep Singh under his banner Legend Studios and directed by acclaimed filmmaker Ajay Bahl.

Names like Ananya Panday, Sharvari Wagh, and Tripti Dimri are reportedly being considered for the lead role. If reports are to be believed, Tabu is also expected to reprise her iconic role. As per Times Now, a source shared, “The producers are very eager to have her reprise her legendary role, as her involvement is deemed crucial to the sequel’s authenticity and emotional depth. Talks are ongoing, and we are still waiting for the official announcement regarding the actress’s casting.”

For those unversed, Tabu had won a National Award for her raw and powerful portrayal of Mumtaz Sawant.

On the work front, Bhandarkar is currently helming The Wives. Starring Sonali Kulkarni, Mouni Roy, Shalini Passi, and Regena Cassandra, it delves into the glamorous yet tumultuous lives of star wives.
