Lokhandwala residents slam Metro construction for potholes and traffic chaos

Residents of Lokhandwala have voiced frustration over the ongoing Mumbai Metro Pink Line 6 construction, saying the stretch of road over the Mogra nullah leading towards a premium residential society has become dangerously uneven and accident-prone. They allege that the slow pace of work has resulted in two lanes being shut for more than a year, causing daily traffic chaos.

Construction of the elevated Metro Line 6, which will connect Swami Samarth Nagar to Vikhroli, is currently in progress. The alignment passes through Swami Samarth Nagar, moves towards Infinity Mall and then heads toward JVLR.

On October 30, the Andheri Lokhandwala Oshiwara Citizens Association raised the issue of potholes and the uneven road surface at P Tandon Marg near the landing of the bridge over Mogra nullah. In an X post, LOCA stated, “Mogra nullah Bridge. P Tandon Marg, Andheri West. Bridge shut partially for Line 6. Massive potholes causing traffic build-up and vehicle damage. No traffic marshals. Your local team is paying no attention.”

Residents say that despite tagging agencies on X, no corrective action has been taken. They allege this reflects an administrative failure and disregard for public safety.

Actor Kashmera Shah said, “I would like to draw MMRDA’s attention to the dangerous condition of the road right outside our building. The ongoing Metro Line 6 bridge construction has already reduced the width of this stretch for over two years, and the newly formed large potholes have made it even more unsafe. These potholes are obstructing traffic flow, damaging vehicles and posing a serious risk to two-wheeler riders. I request that MMRDA take prompt action and repair this portion of the road at the earliest to ensure safe and smooth movement for all commuters.”

There was originally a two-plus-two lane bridge over the Mogra nullah, but due to Metro Line 6 construction and girder launching work, one side has been closed for more than a year. Traffic has been diverted to a single operational lane. Locals have been demanding that the girder launching on the closed side be completed quickly so both lanes can be reopened after resurfacing the entire stretch.

Indian television actor Shikha Singh Shah said, “As Indian citizens, we are all very tolerant and patient when it comes to development and expansion around our homes for a better tomorrow. We, the residents of Runwal Elegante, share the same sentiment but there must be some light at the end of the tunnel. For over a year now, the Metro Line 6 bridge construction has been ongoing, which has significantly narrowed the road outside our building. This has caused heavy traffic pile-ups and frequent near misses for vehicles trying to exit, as they directly face oncoming traffic. Adding to this, the condition of the road has deteriorated severely, with large potholes creating further congestion and increasing waiting time at the entrance. These potholes are not just a challenge for us at Runwal Elegante but a safety hazard for the general public as well, damaging cars and posing serious risks to two-wheeler riders. We sincerely urge the concerned authorities to take prompt action and repair the road at the earliest to prevent ongoing inconvenience and ensure safer, smoother movement for everyone.”
