Three days after a massive fire broke out at a catering shop in Kandivli, severely injuring seven people, most of the victims continue to battle for their lives despite undergoing multiple surgeries. Doctors treating them at the National Burns Hospital, Airoli, have said that the road to recovery remains long. Of the seven victims, only one has shown signs of steady recovery so far. The remaining six continue to remain in a critical state, with some yet to undergo vital surgical procedures.
“Neetu Gupta, Janaki Gupta and Shivani Gandhi have been operated on. Though all surgeries and skin grafting has been done, they continue to be critical as they had 90 per cent burns. They had also inhaled a huge quantity of smoke during the accident which made them weaker,” said D Sunil Keswani, medical director of National Burns Hospital.
However, Durga Gupta and Putani Gautam are yet to be operated on. “We will now plan surgeries on Monday. Both are stable for now but will need surgeries as they also have severe burns,” Keswani added. Meanwhile, another fact has come to light regarding the fire NOC. “The shop did not have a clearance from the fire department and we are now conducting an inquiry against the shop owner. We will also check the licenses of other shops in the area and stringent actions will be taken,” said PD Sandhikar, divisional head, Mumbai Fire Brigade.
