In separate cases, Thane court convicts two brothers on the same day for murder

In a rare instance, a court in Maharashtra`s Thane district convicted two brothers in separate criminal cases on the same day, including one for the brutal murder of their mother.

Principal District Judge SB Agrawal delivered both the judgments on September 12, with copies of the orders becoming available on Wednesday.

In one of the cases, the court found Vishal Arun Alzende guilty of murdering his mother in 2021 following a petty dispute over Rs 20, which she would give him daily for autorickshaw fare, news agency PTI reported.

According to the prosecution, an argument escalated when Alzende mother refused to give the money. In a fit of rage, he fatally attacked her, stabbing her over 50 times with a screwdriver.

The judge described the act as “inhuman and excessively brutal”, noting that the number of stab wounds clearly showed an intent to kill.

The second case, involving Alzende`s brother, pertained to an assault on other family members, though specific details of that case were not immediately disclosed.

Both the brothers were convicted under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, and the sentencing is expected shortly.

The dual convictions on the same day have drawn public attention due to the nature of the crimes and the involvement of two siblings in separate violent acts, PTI reported.

Alzende`s brother, Vishnu, was convicted by the judge for assaulting his grandmother and uncle in 2016. Though he was also accused of killing his father, the court acquitted him for lack of evidence.

While Alzende has been sentenced to life for his mother`s murder, the judge handed Vishnu a one-year rigorous imprisonment in the assault case.

AP Ladvanjari and Rashmi Kshirsagar led the prosecution in both cases, and advocates Sagar Kolhe and Sanjay Gaikwad appeared for the defence.

Tribal man killed, body dumped near Samruddhi Highway in Thane; one arrested

Four persons allegedly thrashed a tribal man to death following an old dispute and dumped the body near Samruddhi Highway in Maharashtra`s Thane district, police said on Wednesday.

The body was found near Ratandhale village along the Mumbai-Nagpur Samruddhi Highway on Tuesday morning, they added.

The accused had a dispute with the 47-year-old victim, identified as Ramdas Gorkhane, a resident of Pradhanpada village, an officer from Shahapur Police Station said, according to PTI.

After a heated argument, they allegedly kicked Gorkhane and also hit him with sticks. When his nephew tried to intervene, the accused asked him to step aside and forcefully bundled the victim into a jeep and took him away, the officer added.

Around 5 am on Tuesday, some passers-by found the body near the Samruddhi Highway. The body was later sent to the government-run JJ Hospital in Mumbai for forensic examination, the police said, reported PTI.

Following a complaint by the victim`s nephew, the police launched a probe and arrested one of the accused, identified as Sunil Nimse, Senior Police Inspector Mukesh Dhage said, adding that efforts were on to trace the others, reported PTI.

A case has been registered against the accused on charges of kidnapping and murder under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
