With Mumbai receiving intense spells of rain since Friday, August 15, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Saturday, August 16, morning issued a Nowcast warning for several other districts of Maharashtra. While addressing the alarming weather situation across Maharashtra, the IMD indicated that parts of the Vidarbha region are expected to experience thunderstorms, lightning, and moderate rainfall activity.
The IMD released the warning at 10:05 am on Saturday. The information also stated that the Vidarbha region will be experiencing rough weather conditions for the next three hours.
Furthermore, according to the IMD bulletin, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are also likely to occur at isolated places over the Yavatmal, Chandrapur, and Gadchiroli districts.
Weather agencies have also advised that residents in these areas should stay indoors, avoid open fields, and exercise caution to prevent lightning-related accidents.
In addition, light to moderate rainfall is expected at many places across Yavatmal, Washim, and Chandrapur. Gadchiroli is likely to witness rain at a few locations, while isolated spells are forecast for Bhandara, Nagpur, Amravati, Akola, Buldana, and Wardha districts. With parts of Maharashtra set to experience heavy rainfall, an advisory has also been issued district-wise by the Indian Meteorological Department.
Earlier on Saturday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) had also issued a red alert for Mumbai, coinciding with Dahi Handi celebrations. With the city all set to experience the joy of Dah Handi across the city, the intense spells of rain might disturb the enthusiasm of the people.
IMD earlier also issued information about the total rainfall in the last few hours. Between 1 am and 4 am on Saturday, several parts of the city witnessed extremely heavy rain. While the Marol Fire Station recorded 207 mm, Nariyalwadi School in Santacruz recorded 202 mm, Chakala Municipal School in Andheri 195 mm, Malpa Dongri Municipal School 183 mm, and Andheri Fire Station 177 mm of rainfall.
The Mumbai Police on Saturday also issued a warning to citizens following the red alert in Mumbai. While putting out a post on social media platform X, Mumbai Police have stated that “Mumbaikars are advised to avoid non-essential travel and exercise caution while venturing out.”
